Halff Associates Wins Gold at Texas Council of Engineering Companies Annual Meeting
2011 Gold Engineering Excellence Award, Category D: Surveying & Mapping
HOUSTON, Texas (15 March 2011) - Halff Associates, Inc. (Halff), one of the nation’s leading engineering/architecture consulting firms, is proud to announce that the Texas Council of Engineering Companies (CEC) has awarded Halff a Gold Medal for the Integrated Storm Water Management Model (ISWMM) work done on behalf of the City of Sugar Land (Sugar Land), Texas. The award will be presented 8 April 2011, at the 45th Annual Texas CEC Conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Austin.
Sugar Land had experienced numerous street flooding in the past. Halff was contracted to develop an ISWMM. The ISWMM project is a comprehensive database of drainage, drainage structures, floodplain, survey, and other applicable data developed in ArcGIS. The geodatabase was developed to provide city staff with a central location to house all applicable drainage information in a user-friendly environment to support emergency response, general information requests, maintenance, and future planning purposes.
Utilization of the ISWMM model will aid in the decision making of city staff that will ultimately benefit the community. Having access to this critical geo-based data will aid in flood reductions, allow emergency management to make quick and educated decisions based on the ponding map, and lay the foundation for future flood warnings on Oyster Creek. This model is also a valuable asset to both the City and the community because it is expandable and dynamic, allowing for updates on an as-needed or requested basis. Future plans are to expand this database into a web-based GIS program that the public can access.
Established in 1966, the Texas Council of Engineering Companies is devoted to the advancement of the practice of consulting engineering, to the promotion of private enterprise, protection of public welfare, and to the improvement of the economic status of professional engineers engaged in the practice of consulting engineering. Coppell Town Center Plaza Receives Texas Recreation & Park Society Award
TRAPS Statewide Award for Park Design Excellence.
RICHARDSON, Texas (27 January 2011) - Halff Associates, Inc. (Halff), one of the nation’s leading engineering/architecture consulting firms, is pleased to announce that the Coppell Town Center Plaza in Coppell, Texas, has received the Statewide Texas Recreation and Park Society (the Society) Award for Park Design Excellence. This award will be presented at the Society's 2011 Annual Institute & Trade Show on 4 March 2011, at the McAllen Convention Center in McAllen, Texas.
Carl White, chairman of the Society awards committee, described the project as a “work of art”, an “excellent design” with “functional spaces”. The awards committee was also impressed with the design process that allowed for public and staff input to help guide the overall design.
Designed by Halff and completed in 2008, the Coppell Town Center Plaza is a marvel of insight and design. The design for this public space reflects an innovative design solution which overcame major constraints posed by the narrow project site that was bordered by the placement of various city facilities including a police station, library and school. A laborious process began with determining the best and most appropriate use of the land, resulting in two years of discussing, reviewing, creating, revising and reviewing again. The result is a public facility that is inviting and welcoming, a focal point where families can gather for a variety of activities or no structured activity at all.
“The results have been outstanding. the space is now a beautiful park-like plaza that has become the pride of the community. The Town Center Plaza has opened a number of opportunities of the city to program a unique space that the citizen have come to love”, said Brad Reid, who is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Coppell. He also added, “This is one of those spaces that is so comfortable and easy to enjoy that it feels as though it naturally developed over time.”
Using the Coppell City Hall as a backdrop, an amphitheater on the north end of the site is used for community events, movie nights, concerts, and drama presentations. The amphitheater edges are further defined by a fountain, a grove of shade trees, and a curved rear seat wall. Among the many unique features is the sundial; a 65-foot tall tower, consisting of a concrete spine and Roughback Leuders Stone curtain, with a tensile membrane shade structure at its base. The construction called for innovative methods, attention to construction detail and measurement precision. The end result is an iconic feature for the city of Coppell that has a form and presence that is unique and inspiring. With a built-in time capsule, the tower has become a focal point and the beginning of a new history for the city.
“This type of venue encourages a new form of recreation in our community including cultural: promoting art shows, musical entertainment, and community theater type events”, said Coppell mayor Doug Stover during the ribbon cutting ceremony on 4 July 2008. Mayor Stover continued, “We really look forward to those alternate type of events that haven't otherwise been present in our community.”
